In a bold initiative that could transform the future of transportation in Nashville, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced Monday the launch of the Music City Loop, a privately funded, high-speed underground tunnel that will transport passengers between downtown Nashville and the airport in as little as eight minutes.
This visionary project will be led by Elon Musk's Boring Company, the same team behind the Las Vegas underground transportation system. But this time, they will travel 10 miles through solid rock beneath Music City, creating a zero-emission tunnel, powered by electric vehicles, designed to reduce surface traffic, lower emissions, and dramatically improve mobility for Nashville residents and visitors.
A press release from the Governor's Office indicated that construction of the Music City Loop will begin as soon as regulatory approvals are obtained, with the first segment potentially operational by fall 2026.
Why it matters:
Travel time: 8 minutes from BNA to downtown.
Seamless: Completely underground, with no traffic detours or bridge closures. Environmentally friendly: Fully electric vehicles, zero emissions.
Private investment: Built and financed by The Boring Company, at no cost to Tennessee residents.
The tunnel will connect Nashville International Airport (BNA) to key destinations in the city, such as the Convention Center, with the possibility of future expansions.
What's next? đ Tunnel route: Still in the final phase.
âïž Groundbreaking: Expected in a matter of weeks.
đ Timeframe: 2 years for completion.
đŒ Jobs: A hiring fair will be held soon.
Local Reactions
While Governor Lee is fully committed, Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell took a more cautious tone: "We are aware of the conversations and still have operational questions," he said in a statement.
As the Music City Loop inches closer to reality, one thing is certain: this isn't just another infrastructure announcement, but a futuristic leap that could make Nashville a national model for urban mobility.
